Spenrath Becomes Fourth Head Coach in Falcons History

December 15, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Falcons head coach and general manager Blaine Moore has relinquished his head coaching duties but will remain the organization's general manager. Moore named his top assistant and former Falcons captain Greg Spenrath as the team's new head coach effective immediately.

This first season in the ECHL for the Falcons marks Spenrath's ninth year with the organization, making him the only individual to have been associated with the team since it became an original member of the West Coast Hockey League in 1995-96. He played parts of seven campaigns with the Falcons under all three of his head coaching predecessors – John Olver, Guy Gadowsky and Moore – serving as captain for five of those seasons, before retiring to behind the bench as Moore's top assistant in 2002-03. Spenrath still saw some action as a player last year, suiting up in 11 games due to a rash of injuries suffered by the club, to finish his Falcons playing career as the team's all-time leader in games played (361) and penalty minutes (1,745).

Moore steps down in the midst of his fifth season as both head coach and general manager, leaving the bench as the team's all-time leader in wins by a coach with a record of 147-132-32. As general manager, he is responsible for the organization's hockey operations, including player personnel. Moore began his association with the Falcons as a player/assistant coach during the 1997-98 and 1998-99 campaigns prior to taking over the head coaching duties in 1999-00. His impressive coaching resumé includes having been named the 2000-01 WCHL Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons to club records for most wins (44) and points (94) in a single season. After guiding the team to the Taylor Cup Championship in 2001-02, Moore put his club in position for a second straight title before falling just short in Game Seven of the 2002-03 Taylor Cup Finals.

Spenrath makes his head-coaching debut tomorrow at Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. when the Falcons host the San Diego Gulls, who make their first visit to Fresno since last season's Taylor Cup Finals. It is a Carl's Jr. Two-for-Tuesday, with two-for-one coupons to the game available at all participating Carl's Jr. restaurants.

Tickets beginning as low as $8 are still available for the contest and can be purchased at the Save Mart Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, which include select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo Latino locations, charged by phone at 485-TIXS or bought online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon throughout www.fresnofalcons.com.
