Lynx Skate Through Tough Week

December 15, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Augusta had a four game stretch this week, and they battled hard every night, through injuries, call-ups, and scrambled lines. Through it all, the team managed one win in four tries, a 4-2 win over the Greenville Grrrowl on Friday night.

12/9 Augusta 1 @ Columbus 5

Carlyle Lewis' hat trick would lead the Cottonmouths past the Lynx in Columbus on Tuesday night. Greg Jacina scored the only goal of the game for the Lynx to make it 2-1, but Columbus would score three more times to put the game out of reach for their first win against Augusta this season.

12/12 Greenville 2 @ Augusta 4

With no scoring in the game until the second period, fans would be forgiven if they expected a low-scoring affair. However, the middle frame exploded with four goals in total, two for each side and three coming on the power play. Martin Lapointe and Louis Goulet each notched man-up markers for the Lynx, with Jason Saal assisting on both power play goals. Saal would also assist on an empty net goal by Wes Swinson that put some insurance on the board after Joe Sewell's game winner. Saal stopped 25 shots for the win and his three assists in one game set a team record for most points by a goaltender in a game.

12/13 Gwinnett 4 @ Augusta 0

Augusta couldn't find the offense and were blanked for only the second time this season. Peter Hamerlik stopped 34 shots in the loss for the Lynx, while rookie Paul Lewandowski had his best game as a pro for the Gladiators, notching two goals and an assist in the win.

12/14 Augusta 1 @ Florence 2

Florence grabbed the early lead with a power play goal from Alan Sirois, and then another from Wes Goldie late in the third period to skate off with the 2-1 win. Jonathan Gagnon tried to rally the team with his goal 50 seconds after Goldie's, but the Lynx could not find the final marker to finish the week 1-3-0.

Lynx Notes

Jason Saal's three assists in the Lynx win Friday night sets a new team record for assists by a goaltender in a game, and in a season as he now has five on the year. Two of Saal's helpers have come shorthanded, two on the power play, and one on an empty net goal. He has yet to add a point at even strength... slacker... Augusta has allowed a power play goal in their last eight consecutive contests... Greg Jacina had a three game point scoring streak (1-2) snapped when the Lynx were shut out on Saturday night... Peter Hamerlik made his first back-to-back starts since 11/2 and 11/7 this past weekend.

Player Of The Week

Jason Saal went 1-1-0 this week with a 3.50 GAA, not to mention his three assist performance in the team's 4-2 win over Greenville Friday night. Saal has been the workhorse for the club this season, with an overall record of 9-5-1, a 2.33 GAA and a .931 save percentage.
