Checkers 18-16-3 heading into second half of season

CHARLOTTE, NC - One game past the midway point of the season, the Charlotte Checkers have a record of 18-16-3 and look to take advantage of schedule loaded with home games. The Checkers dropped their only two games last week - a 1-5 loss to Pensacola at home and a 3-5 loss at Gwinnett.

Wednesday, January 11, 2006 vs. Pensacola, L, 1-5

The Pensacola Ice Pilots scored the first two goals of the game setting the tone for night en route to a 5-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers in front of 4,306 fans Wednesday at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. The Ice Pilots score all but one of their goals on the power play as they converted on 4-of-8 advantages.

Steven Later and Adam Courchaine each notched a goal and three assists for the Ice Pilots and were named the First and Second Stars, respectively. Both Later and Courchaine's goals came on the power play along with goals by mark Rooneem and Brendan Cook.

Juris Stals scored the lone goal for the Checkers on the power play and earned the Third Star of the game.

Saturday, January 14, 2006 @ Gwinnett, L, 3-5 The Charlotte Checkers improved their performance Saturday night after a poor effort in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to Pensacola, but it wasn't enough to prevent a fourth straight loss. Guillaume Desbiens scored two goals including an empty-net goal that iced the game in the Gwinnett Gladiators 5-3 victory over the Checkers in Georgia.

Scott Kelman, Scott Mifsud and Adam Smyth scored single goals for the Gladiators, while Hugh Jessiman had two goals for Charlotte. Mike Bayrack had the other Checkers goal, and goalie Chris Holt lost his second straight making 36 saves. The loss was the Checkers fourth straight.

- The Checkers lead the league with 12 shorthanded goals.
