San Diego Gulls News Release

OVERALL RECORD: 17-14-4
LAST WEEK: 2-1-0
STANDINGS: 3rd (Pacific Division)

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls went 2-1 last week, with the lone loss coming against the Las Vegas Wranglers, the best team in the ECHL. But behind the play of Pierre-Luc Sleigher (1g, 4a), the Gulls continued their dominance over Bakersfield and picked up their second victory against the Alaska Aces. Despite the big wins, the Gulls slipped into third place in the Pacific Division, two points behind Long Beach.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Jan. 10 @ Las Vegas: The Wranglers entered the contest with the most points in the ECHL and showed why, scoring five goals over 10 minutes to run away from the Gulls, 6-2 at the Orleans Arena. Dan Tudin's goal at the 13:13 mark of the opening frame set off a flurry of five Las Vegas scores, spanning 10:03 into the fourth minute of the second period. San Diego finally got on the board - twice - in the third period. At the 2:53 mark, defenseman Evan Shaw broke the ice with his first goal as a Gull and second of the year. Kelly Askew followed with his initial score as a Gull and first since 2002 with 11:40 left to make it 6-2.

Jan. 13 vs. Bakersfield: Grady Moore scored his first goal of the year, helping the Gulls remain unbeaten against the Condors, 6-3, on Friday night. Moore's power-play score at the 14:25 mark of the second period turned out to be the game-winner for San Diego. Steve Hildenbrand and Sleigher added a score and two assists apiece for the home team, which got a multi-point night from four players. All-Star Jesse Bennefield also contributed a goal and an assist, while Mark Wires notched a pair of helpers in only his second game for San Diego. The Gulls improved to a perfect 5-0-0 against the Condors this season.

Jan. 14 vs. Alaska: The Gulls picked up a huge win Saturday night, defeating the seemingly invincible Alaska Aces 5-3, before 5,862 at the ipayOne Center. The Aces entered the contest unbeaten in 22 of their last 24 games and were 4-1 against the Gulls this season. They out-shot San Diego 48 to 25 and even jumped out to a 2-0 lead. But the Gulls erased the early deficit, helped by two short-handed tallies 29 seconds apart in the second period. The goaltending was also rock-solid, as Tyler Weiman turned aside 45 shots. Offensively Askew and Jonathon Shockey each had a goal and an assist, while newcomer Wires and Sleigher each chipped in with two helpers.

Individual Notes: Hildenbrand has a five-game point streak and has 31 points (12g, 19a) in the last 24 games... Sleigher has points in eight of the last nine games and has 15 points during that span (4g, 11a)... Weiman has now won seven of his last nine decisions and has stopped 293 of the last 314 shots (.933 save percentage)... Five regulars remain out of the lineup with injuries: Alex Kim (broken collarbone), Alex Rogosheske (torn ACL), David Svagrovsky (tear in finger), Guillaume Fournier (concussion) and Andy Thompson (wrist surgery)...

Team Notes: San Diego has scored seven short-handed goals in the last 10 games... The Gulls have won four of their last six games and are 16-9-4 since getting of to a 1-5-0 start... During the last 10 games, San Diego has killed 61 of 70 penalties (87 percent)... Four of its next five games are at home...

San Diego returns to action at home Friday, as the Las Vegas Wranglers make their first visit this season. Game-time is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. The Gulls will play in Long Beach Saturday, Jan. 21 before coming back home Sunday, Jan. 22 against the Bakersfield Condors.
