Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, are proud to announce that defenseman Andrew Campbell has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Manchester community during the 2013-14 season.

Campbell, in his sixth year with the Manchester Monarchs and first as the team's Captain, has become not only a fan favorite during his stint in Manchester, but one of the leaders both on and off the ice for the Monarchs. Always one of the first members of the team to volunteer his services for the greater good of the community, Campbell takes pride in his community endeavors, always putting on a smile and willing to go the extra mile for those in need. He enjoys talking about the Monarchs, hockey in general, and bringing fans into his world as a professional athlete.

Campbell is a huge advocate for the Monarchs Winning With Wellness/Get Moving Manchester program. This program allows kids to interact with players in an educational setting. It is geared toward both elementary school and middle school children and features Monarchs players visiting schools throughout Manchester to discuss the importance of living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through a proper diet and exercise. Campbell jumps at the opportunity to go to local schools and speak with the children on a more personal level and share his story with them. This year, the Winning With Wellness/Get Moving Manchester program reached nearly 1,000 students to bring the total number of students impacted by the program since its inception in 2008 to over 7,000 students.

Kimberly Mueller, the Monarchs Vice President of Public Affairs, describes Campbell as the "textbook role model for our organization. His ability and desire to speak with children of all ages about reading or physical fitness through the many Monarchs Care Foundation programs is remarkable. He is able to effectively communicate the importance of reading, eating healthy and staying drug free - all values which Campbell speaks genuinely and candidly about to children."

In addition to the Monarchs Winning With Wellness/Get Moving Manchester program, Campbell has also participated in the Monarchs annual Kids Club Party and Ticket Package Holder Meet & Greets, the Read Across America program, youth hockey practices, sponsorship appearances and the Monarchs Care Foundation events.

On his own time, Campbell volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of Manchester. Every Thursday afternoon, from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., Campbell helps the fourth and fifth grade kids with their homework and then plays games such as pool and foosball with them.

"Campbell is always one of the first players to volunteer his services, and it does not go unnoticed from top-to-bottom in the organization," said Mueller. "His ability to communicate effectively with kids makes them feel comfortable, allowing him to convey important messages with ease. His enthusiasm and energy is contagious and students are able to take that positive influence into their daily lives. Campbell is an inspiration and a role model for children throughout Manchester."

Campbell is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2012-13 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League on April 18

The Monarchs return to the Verizon Wireless Arena to host the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Catch all of the play-by-play action of Monarchs hockey with Ken Cail on Monarchs Radio Network WGIR AM 610, WGIRAM.com, and at manchestermonarchs.com presented by Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
