Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME- The Portland Pirates fought hard but were unable to put away the Hershey Bears, dropping the game 3-2 Wednesday night. Tobias Rieder and Andy Miele each scored while Jordan Martinook tallied two assists. Louis Domingue made 22 saves in the defeat in net.

The Pirates struck first with Rieder scoring his 27th goal of the year. The Hershey Bears looked to get the puck out of the zone but Sam Klassen was able to keep it in at the blue line, throwing it Martinook along the boards. Martinook in turn dished the puck into the middle where Rieder wheeled and delivered a rocket to the far post and in. The Bears countered just 27 seconds later with Jeff Taffe burying his shot from the slot low on Domingue. The Pirates would again take the lead with Miele potting his 27th of the year at 15:02. Again, the Bears failed to clear, allowing Miele to grab the puck and lay it off to Martinook. Martinook quickly passed back to Miele who dipped his shoulder and deked past Leggio, moving to his backhand and easily sliding the puck into the cage.

The Bears barreled their way out of the locker rooms in the second, knotting the score at 2-2 just 21 seconds into the frame when Caleb Herbert scored on a backhand. At 8:43, a centering pass deflected and found its way into the Pirates net with Kris Newbury getting credit for the goal and handing the Bears the lead, one that they would not relinquish.

Leggio made a few big stops for the Bears in the third, denying a pileup in front of his net about midway through the period and coming across for a great shoulder save on Martinook in the last two minutes while his team was a man down. When the final buzzer sounded, the Pirates were still trailing, handing the Bears their third straight victory.
