Barons Top Bulldogs 5-4 in Shootout Win
April 2, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release
Andrew Miller, Greg Miller and Brad Hunt each had two assists as the Oklahoma City Barons defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-4 in a shootout Wednesday night at the Cox Convention Center.
With the assists, Greg Miller tallied his first AHL points, while Hunt moved into fourth place in scoring among AHL defensemen with 47 total points.
Oklahoma City got on the scoreboard first, after Hamilton was whistled for having too many men on the ice at the 4:31 mark of the first period. With three seconds remaining on the Barons power play, Andrew Miller fed Matthew Ford near the left circle on a 2-on-1 rush, and Ford whipped a shot past Hamilton goalie Robert Mayer for a 1-0 Oklahoma City lead at 4:31.
Hamilton tied the game exactly four minutes later when, on the power play due to a slashing call to Hunt at 6:39, the Bulldogs' Drew Shiestel threw a shot from the point the snuck through a screen in front and past Oklahoma City netminder Richard Bachman, evening the score at 1-1.
After a failed attempt on a penalty shot awarded to Barons winger Curtis Hamilton at the 8:46 mark, the score remained tied until the 17:52 mark of the first, when the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead after Patrick Holland gathered the puck off the faceoff from the left wing, glided through the Oklahoma City crease and slid the puck past a diving Bachman.
The Barons tied the game early in the second period after penalties to Hamilton's Gabriel Dumont and Oklahoma City's Ben Eager created a 4-on-4 situation at 4:35 of the frame. Moments later, Brandon Davidson sent a shot from the point that tipped off the skate of a Bulldog defenseman and skidded past Mayer for a 2-2 tie at 5:13.
Oklahoma City extended its lead to 3-2 at the halfway point of the period, when Greg Miller gathered the puck from the left circle and, after skating behind the net, swatted a backhand pass through the crease that Travis Ewanyk chipped into the Bulldogs net.
A short while into the third period, Hamilton knotted the score once again, when Sven Andrighetto skated in from the right side and snapped a quick shot that beat Bachman on the stick side at 3:47.
Hamilton took a late lead at 13:27 of the third following a save by Bachman on a Greg Pateryn shot from the point. As Bachman attempted to gather and freeze the puck he'd pressed against the right post, Dumont poked it loose and into the Barons net, giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
After a scoreless overtime period, the Barons sealed the victory on shootout goals by C.J. Stretch and Alex Lavoie.
The Barons next game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, when they take on the Charlotte Checkers at the Cox Convention Center. The first 2,000 fans will receive a limited edition soccer ball as part of Sports Celebration Night, and one fan will drive away in a Volkswagen Golf compliments of the Barons' Drive Away Every Saturday promotion.
