Crunch Fall to Rochester 5-2

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch dropped a 5-2 decision to the Rochester Americans tonight at the Blue Cross Arena.

The loss snaps a four-game point streak for Syracuse and brings the club's overall record to 27-30-4-7. The Crunch hold a 4-3-0-0 lead in the season series against Rochester with one game remaining on April 18.

Rochester goaltender Andrey Makarov stopped 24 of 26 shots faced while Crunch netminder Cedrick Desjardins stopped 10 of 11 in relief of Kristers Gudlevskis. The Crunch converted on one of three power-play chances and stopped Rochester from converting on two man-advantage opportunities.

Rochester center Brayden Irwin opened the scoring 2:48 into the first frame by knocking a loose puck past Gudlevskis. Assists were credited to Phil Varone and Nick Petrecki. The Amerks doubled their lead 15:43 into the first period when Dan Catenacci converted a cross-crease pass from Kevin Porter. Joel Armia picked up the secondary helper on the play.

Syracuse went into the first intermission trailing 3-0 thanks to an unassisted goal from Irwin with 2:58 to play in the first period. Irwin capitalized on a turnover in the Crunch defensive end and backhanded the puck past Gudlevskis for his second goal of the game. Catenacci added his second goal of the game 3:17 into the second period assisted by Armia and Makarov. After Gudlevskis made the initial save Catenacci picked up a long rebound and backhanded the puck into the net to give Rochester a 4-0 lead. Following the goal Gudlevskis was replaced by Desjardins after allowing four goals on 13 shots.

Syracuse cut their deficit to 4-1 with a power-play goal from Cedric Paquette late in the second stanza. Paquette jammed the puck past Makarov from the right side with seven seconds to play in the period. Assists on the play went to Nikita Nesterov and Brett Connolly.

Rochester added to their lead making it 5-1, 3:32 into the final frame with a goal from Frederick Roy assisted by Mikhail Grigorenko and Kevin Sundher. Syracuse defenseman Dmitry Korobov cut the Crunch deficit to 5-2 when his shot was redirected past Makarov at the 16:36 mark of the third period.

The Crunch host the Albany Devils at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4.
