St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps are proud to announce that Jason Jaffray has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the greater St. John's community during the 2013-14 season.

The St. John's captain has spearheaded a multitude of community events and endeavors through this three-year career with the IceCaps and this season was no different. One of Jaffray's most memorable efforts came during the Christmas season. He and his wife Michelle rallied the team to assist a needy family in the St. John's area to provide them with a Christmas to remember. Jaffray also visited schools throughout the season to help with reading programs, teach life lessons and assist with ball hockey programs and has provided IceCaps tickets to children and families dealing with various health challenges.

Continuing his commitment to minor hockey which started last season, Jaffray volunteered his time to visit local minor hockey practices. This season also saw Jaffray strike a special relationship with a minor hockey player, who suffered a serious medical incident during one of his games. Jaffray heard about this situation and made an extra effort to reach out to the player and his family. Once the teenager was feeling up to coming to a game, Jaffray quickly got involved once again to ensure the player had a special experience.

For 10 games this season, Jaffray hosted a young fan through the "Captain for a Day" promotion. At the end of each game the young fan would come to the IceCaps dressing room to meet Jaffray, who would spend some time with the fan, sign some autographs and get to know the young person.

This year during the All Star Classic in St. John's, Jaffray captained the AHL Team and throughout the course of the event, he was a gentlemen and a true ambassador for the IceCaps organization and the AHL, and took time to visit children at the Janeway Hospital with other members of the team.

Jaffray is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2013-14 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League later this month.
