Buffalo Bisons News Release
BUFFALO, NY - Steward Berroa helped carry the Buffalo Bisons offensively on Thursday night with three hits and a trio of RBIs in the team's 6-4 victory over the Worcester Red Sox at Sahlen Field.
The Bisons fell behind Worcester for the third straight day, but much like game one of the doubleheader last night were able to climb out of the early hole. The Red Sox plated a run in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a base hit for a 1-0 lead.
However, Buffalo scored three times in the bottom of the second inning against Jason Alexander to flip a one-run deficit into a two-run advantage through two frames. The team was able to take advantage of a pair of Worcester errors for three runs in the bottom of the second. Berroa drove in a pair with a two-run double that scored Brian Serven and Leo Jimenez for a 2-1 lead. Spencer Horwitz's 21st RBI of the year extended the lead to 3-1 before the end of the inning.
Berroa added to Buffalo's lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The homer was the switch-hitting outfielder's fourth of the season with the Bisons, increasing the lead to 4-1.
Worcester was able to trim the deficit to just a run with three of their own in the top of the eighth inning. Four straight batters reached base, including back-to-back RBI base hits by Dalton Guthrie and Mark Kolozsvary. That was followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Chase Meidroth. The three runs allowed the WooSox to get within one, 5-4.
Berroa added his third hit of the game with two out in the bottom of the eighth. His single to right field followed after a Jimenez two-out hit. Jimenez scored on a wild pitch that extended Buffalo's lead to 6-4 after eight innings. Berroa was also credited with a stolen base on the play that scored Jimenez with Horwitz at the plate.
Connor Cooke was able to record a pair of strikeouts to secure the final three outs and his third save of the season. Luis Quiñones was credited with his league-leading fifth win of the year for his two innings of scoreless relief, as well.
