Aerodynamics...

Celebration on Hold...Mother Nature intervened before the Aeros could make their fourth straight trip to the playoffs official, as Akron and Altoona were rained out last night and Harrisburg kept its fingernail-thin post-season hopes alive with a 7-2 win in Erie. Akron's magic number to clinch a playoff spot remained at one, and the club can clinch its fourth straight trip to the playoffs with a win tonight. Bowie doubled-up Trenton 4-2 last night, and the Baysox cut their magic number down to one to clinch first place in the Southern Division.

Marvelous Martin...Enough cannot be said of the job J.D. Martin has done since moving into the starting rotation when LHP Scott Lewis was promoted to Class AAA Buffalo August 14th. Martin has helped stop a four-game losing streak and two three-game skids, and ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 20.2 before Jose Tabata's solo homer Tuesday night. Martin has won all three of his starts since joining the rotation full-time, leads the Aeros with 11 wins on the season, and his 2.55 ERA would rank third in the league if he had enough innings to qualify. He improved to a perfect 8-0 at home, and has not lost since May 27th. In the 16 appearances since his last defeat, the native of Ridgecrest, CA has gone 7-0 with a 0.98 ERA, allowing just five earned runs in 46 innings. He has struck out 43 and walked only 11 over that stretch.

Hodges Honored...The accolades keep pouring in for 3B Wes Hodges, who claimed Eastern League Rookie of the Year honors today. The native of Chattanooga, TN is hitting .285 while leading Akron in home runs (16), RBI (91), and hits (138). He ranks second on the club in games played (128), runs scored (66), and doubles (25), and is third with 52 walks. His 91 RBI are second in the league and the second-most in single-season franchise history. The former Georgia Tech standout also played in the All-Star game and was named to the season-ending All-Star team, participated in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium, and was Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week June 15th. He is the third Aero to win the award, following Jordan Brown last season and current Cleveland All-Star Grady Sizemore in 2003.

More Awards...The Bowie Baysox swept the final three Eastern League awards today, as OF Lou Montanez was named MVP (Hodges was second), Brad Bergesen won the Pitcher of the Year award, and skipper Brad Komminsk claimed Manager of the Year honors (Akron's Mike Sarbaugh was third). It's the first time that an Eastern League team has had both the MVP and Pitcher of the Year since 1995, with Binghamton's Jay Payton (MVP) and Paul Wilson (PoY).
