New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats set a single-season attendance record for the fifth consecutive season by drawing 373,227 fans in 2008, but a standing-room-only crowd of 6,689 saw the Binghamton Mets spoil the home finale at Merchantsauto.com Stadium by blanking the Fisher Cats, 5-0, on Thursday night.
Binghamton (72-66) broke up a 0-0 deadlock in the top of the seventh inning against Marty McLeary when Shawn Bowman (3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R) led off with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt and scored on an infield single by Ambiorix Concepcion (2-for-3, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R) for a 1-0 lead. Concepcion stole second base, moved up to third on catcher J.P. Arencibia's throwing error and scored when pinch-hitter Caleb Stewart (1-for-1, SF, 3 RBI) lifted a sacrifice fly off reliever Daryl Harang for a 2-0 Mets' lead.
McLeary (0-1) suffered his first loss for New Hampshire (59-79) by allowing two runs -one earned- on seven hits in 6.1 innings. The right-hander fanned three and walked three.
Binghamton put the game out of reach by tacking on three more runs in the top of the ninth inning against Seth Overbey. Concepion had an RBI single before Stewart added a bases-loaded, two-run single for a 5-0 lead.
Five Mets' pitchers combined on the four-hit shutout, with reliever Joe Hietpas earning the victory. Hietpas (3-5) worked one inning for the triumph.
Starting pitcher Tobi Stoner went the first five innings, yielding only a pair of singles to Jacob Butler (2-for-3, BB). The right-hander notched two strikeouts and walked three.
Hietpas, Casey Hoorelbeke, Al Reyes and Tim Lavigne each tossed a scoreless frame to give the Mets their second straight victory, moving Binghamton to within one game of the second-place Portland Sea Dogs for the Northern Division Wild Card playoff spot with four games remaining.
The Fisher Cats begin their final four-game series of the season Friday night at Hadlock Field against the Sea Dogs at 7:05pm. New Hampshire left-hander Jo Matumoto (2-0, 3.10) gets the start against Portland left-hander Kris Johnson (8-9, 3.62). Radio coverage begins at 6:40pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
