August 28, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1) News Release

Portland, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Bowie Baysox manager Brad Komminsk has been selected as the 2008 Eastern League Manager of the Year. It is the second time during his managerial career that he has won the award, as he also took home the award with the Akron Aeros during the 2002 season. In his first season with the Baysox, Komminsk has led his club to a record of 82-55 (.599) and a postseason berth, their first since the 1997 campaign. The Baysox currently have a 5.5 game lead over Akron in the Southern Division standings and if they can hold onto first place it would be the first time they have won the Southern Division regular season title in the history of the franchise. Komminsk is joined on his coaching staff in Bowie this season by pitching coach Mike Griffin, bench coach Moe Hill, athletic trainer Joe Benge and Strength and Conditioning Coach James Petra.

Komminsk, who was selected by Baseball America as the "Best Managerial Prospect" in the Eastern League this season, started his managerial career in 1999 with the Columbus RedStixx of the South Atlantic League. Brad moved up to manage the Kinston Indians during the 2000 and 2001 seasons and was the skipper of the Akron Aeros from 2002-2004. During his seven seasons as a manager, Brad has led his team to a postseason berth five times, including winning an Eastern League Championship with Akron in 2003. Brad has a career managerial record of 553-425 (.565) over seven seasons.

Prior to coaching, Komminsk spent 17 seasons as an outfielder in professional baseball. Komminsk was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the fourth overall pick in the 1979 draft and went on to make his Major League debut with the Braves in 1983. During his career, Brad played for the Braves (1983-1986), Brewers (1987), Indians (1989), Giants (1990), Orioles (1990), and Oakland (1991). Komminsk also played in the White Sox Minor League system for two seasons (1992-1993), before playing in Italy in 1994 and 1995. Brad rounded out his career playing in one game for (Triple-A) Toledo in 1997, before becoming a coach. In 1983, Komminsk was named the International League Rookie of the Year with Richmond and in 1987 he led all of Triple-A baseball with 32 home runs for Denver, while playing in the Milwaukee organization.

Trenton manager Tony Franklin finished second in the voting for the Manager of the Year Award and Akron skipper Mike Sarbaugh finished in third place in the voting. The award was voted on by respective Eastern League team managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media.
