August 28, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1) News Release
Portland, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Bowie Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Bred Bergesen has been selected as the 2008 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. The 22-year old started the season with the Federick Keys, where he went 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in four appearances to earn a promotion to Bowie. Since joining the Baysox on April 21st, he has been the ace of the Bowie pitching staff. Brad started his first career experience at the Double-A level by winning each of his first five decisions, a streak which he matched from July 18th-August 12th. In 23 games with the Baysox this season the 6'2", 205 lb. hurler has posted a 15-5 record with 72 strikeouts and a 3.11 ERA over 142 innings. Bergesen currently leads the league in wins (15) and WHIP (1.14) and he is also among the league leaders in ERA (3.11-6th) and innings pitched (142-10th).
The Concord, California native has already set a new Bowie franchise record for wins in a season and he was selected as the right-handed starting pitcher on the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Team. Bergesen was also the starting pitcher for the Southern Division at the 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game and he retired all three batters that he faced.
Brad, who has allowed two earned runs or less in 14 of the 23 games he has appeared in for the Baysox this season while walking 26 batters and striking out 72, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round of the 2004 draft out of Foothill High School in California.
Portland right-handed starter Michael Bowden finished second in the voting for the award and Trenton left-handed starter Phil Coke finished third. This award was voted on by Eastern League team managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media.
