Aeros Split Twin Bill, Clinch Wild Card
August 28, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Akron split a doubleheader with Altoona and clinched the wild card in the Southern Division in the process, taking game one 3-0 before falling 1-0 in the nightcap before 9,110 fans at Canal Park Thursday. The Aeros moved to 77-61 while the Curve now stand at 62-76.
That means the playoff pairing in the Southern Division is set, as Bowie clinched first place in the division and will have home-field advantage in the best-of-five Southern Division Championship Series. Games one and two will be on Wednesday, September 3rd and Thursday, September 4th at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, with both games starting at 7:05 p.m. The scene will then shift to Canal Park for game three Friday, September 5th at 7:05 p.m. and game four (if necessary) on Saturday, September 6th at 7:05 p.m. Game five (if necessary) would be Sunday, September 7th in Bowie, with a game time yet to be determined.
The Aeros took the opener of the doubleheader behind the left arm of starter Ryan Edell (7-8), who blanked Altoona on three hits for 5.2 innings, walking one and striking out seven. Akron got a solo home run from Wyatt Toregas in the fifth and a key two-run triple from Matt Whitney in the sixth before Scott Roehl notched the final four outs for his seventh save of the season. Kyle Bloom (5-8) went the distance for Altoona, giving up three runs on five hits in six innings.
The nightcap featured an RBI double from Altoona's Jose Tabata in the top of the second and nothing else, as the Aeros were blanked on four hits. Juan Mateo (7-1) earned the win with three innings of one-hit relief, while Neil Wagner (0-2) allowed the only run and suffered the loss. Whitney went 3-6 in the two games combined and extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games.
The Aeros will hit the road Monday, starting a four-game series at Erie to cap the regular season. Steven Wright (3-3, 4.54 ERA) will take the hill for Akron against Luis Marte (4-3, 5.22 ERA) for the SeaWolves. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., and the game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
