Connecticut Defenders News Release
READING, PA- The offense has been sporadic all season long for Connecticut but when they show up, they definitely show up. The Defenders cruised to an 11-2 win over Reading to get a series split against the R-Phils in the last meeting of the season.
The first inning had been good for the Defenders three out four games as they scored a pair of runs in each game, Thursday was the same. Adam Witter delivered the big hit as he drove in Richardson and Klink with a shot down the right field line to give the Defenders an early 2-0 lead.
Reading responded in the third as Spidale leadoff with a standup double, Donald got on with a bunt single and the R-Phils were in business. Greg Golson drove in the R-Phils first run with a base hit and Donald later scored to tie the game at 2-2 on a throwing error by Cordido.
Simon Klink leadoff the fourth with a walk and the next two batters were retired but the Defenders drummed up a two out rally. Carlos Sosa drove home Klink as he blasted a double in the left centerfield alleyway and later scored on a Mike Mooney base hit. Connecticut led 4-0.
Connecticut added a lone run in the fifth as Richardson got aboard an error on first baseman Clay Harris that allowed Klink to bring him in on a double to left center and give the Defenders a 5-2 advantage.
The Defenders would coast from there as they added three more in the sixth and the seventh. Mike Mooney finished a triple away from the cycle as he went 3 for 5 driving in four runs and the biggest was his three run bomb in the seventh that shut the door on the R-Phils.
Paul Oseguera picked up his third win as he threw three scoreless innings of one hit baseball walking two and striking out a pair. R-Phils starter, Tyson Brummett dropped his ninth game while rendering ten runs, nine earned off of twelve hits.
Connecticut will travel northeast to take division leading Trenton for a four game series to wrap up the 2008 season. Catch all the action on the Defenders Radio Network starting at 6:50pm with the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-game Show.
