Aces Hit the Road
November 3, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â After winning both of its first two series at home, the Alaska Aces begin a three-game road trip at the home of the first-place Las Vegas Wranglers.
Mark Smith, Alaska's leading scorer, registered a pair of goals to help bring the Aces back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits Saturday, but Trevor Baker scored the game-winning goal for Peoria as the Rivermen salvaged the finale of a three-game set at Sullivan Arena and ended Alaska's four-game winning streak. Mike Scott scored twice Friday as the Aces won 5-2, while Smith had a goal and two assists in Wednesday's come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Rivermen, in which Alaska trailed 3-0 at the midway point of the second period.
Smith has moved into a tie for eighth on the ECHL scoring chart with 11 points on five goals and six assists. The Aces have played stifling defense over their first six games, limiting opponents to an average of 20.5 shots/game, more than four fewer than the next-best team in that department (Bakersfield). Alaska also has scored a power play goal in each of its first six games and ranks third among 31 ECHL teams with a 24.2% success ratio. The Aces also rank among the top 10 penalty killing units in the league, with a 88.6% kill ratio good enough for eighth-best in the league.
Currently 4-2 and owners of the second-best winning percentage in the Pacific Division, Alaska's road trip starts with the Wranglers, who are 6-1-1 overall and unbeaten (5-0) at home going into their game with Florida Tuesday. Alaska meets Las Vegas in the Orleans Arena Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. AST before heading to Long Beach (2-4-1 as of Monday) Friday night at 6:30 p.m. AST and Bakersfield (2-5-1) Saturday at 6:00 p.m. AST.
All Alaska games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
