Greensboro Generals News Release

Generals complete opening month: The Greensboro Generals completed the opening month of the 2003-04 season, and now turn their focus to the first full month of the ECHL schedule. In the last week of October, Greensboro faced the Trenton Titans, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, and began the November schedule with a road game against the Roanoke Express. Here is a recap of the Generals games from last week:

LAST THREE GAMES

Titans 4, Generals 1

GREENSBORO, NC—For the second time in three games the Greensboro Generals (3-2-0) lost on their home ice, falling short of Trenton Titans 4-1 at the Greensboro Coliseum. Last season the Generals did not lose their second home game until November 21, 2002, when they took on the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies.

The Titans (2-3-0) scored two goals in the opening period, the first coming off a laser shot from Devin Rask, taking a 1-0 lead at the 5:57 mark. Trenton would strike with a second goal, when with just over a minute remaining in the period, Matt Zultek sent a shot past Generals netminder Daniel Berthiaume, giving the Titans a 2-0 heading into the locker rooms.

In the second, Greensboro's Eric Fortier scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, and third in as many games to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Fortier goal marked the only power-play conversion for either team in the game, with both teams having five opportunities. Trenton would retaliate with a goal of their own, as Bryce Coble provided the Titans with a two-goal cushion, making the lead 3-1 at the 11:42 mark of the second.

Trenton scored the lone goal of the third period, when Matt Zultek registered his second of the game at the 11:25 mark, to make the final score 4-1. The Titans were led by the defensive effort of goalie Andrew Allen who stopped 31 Generals shots on goal. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Generals, as well as a three-game home winning streak over the Titans.

Generals 4, Bullies 3

GREENSBORO, NC—The last time the Greensboro Generals saw the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (6-1-0) was the 2003 ECHL playoffs. Greensboro avenged a 2002-03 season ending loss with a 4-3 victory off the stick of Captain Mark Turner, sending the Bullies to their first loss of the year.

The game-winning goal came at the 17:13 mark of the third period, just after a line change, as Mark Turner sent home a backhanded rebound as Greensboro moves to 4-2-0 on the season.

"Mike Bayrack was just battling against the wall, and there was a line change, and I simply jumped on it. Sam Ftorek ended up with the puck, chipped it through, and I immediately went to the net. I just shot it and nobody went for the rebound, I jumped on it quickly and came around the back of the net and backhanded it in," Turner said of his game-winner. "You can't score goals unless you put the puck on net."

Greensboro started the game out with a burst, taking advantage of a short-handed situation, as Matt Turek sent the Generals to a 1-0 lead at the 2:17 mark. The Generals would wait just over one minute to score their second, converting a power play, as Eric Fortier sent home his fifth goal, and second power play conversion, in the last three games. Atlantic City retaliated with a laser shot past netminder Daniel Berthiaume, as Stefan Rivard notched his first goal of the season, making the score 2-1 heading into the second.

"The guys showed a lot of desire in the early going because we knew that we were in our own building here, and we have to set the tone. I just told them that we have to be physical, because you have to be physical in your own building and let other teams know that you mean business. If you don't people are going to come in here and think it is a piece of cake coming into Greensboro, and it is not going to be that way, and we are not going to let it be that way," Head Coach/General Manager Rick Adduono noted of his team's performance against the Bullies.

Atlantic City scored the only goals of the second period, the first coming off a power-play conversion by Jon Cullen, sending another laser shot past Berthiaume. With just 3:11 remaining in the frame, the Bullies would take their first lead of the game, as Dave Reid scored his first goal of the season, making the score 3-2 at the end of two periods.

The veteran leadership of Greensboro began to take over in the third period, as defensemen Geno Parrish tied the game at 3-3 on a breakaway goal just 1:53 into the period. Parrish's defensive play, along with the goaltending of Berthiaume who stopped 25 shots in the game, helped Greensboro to earn the victory with 2:47 remaining.
