Gulls Start Making Their Move
November 3, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ Ok, the San Diego Gulls are now in fourth place in the Pacific Division. On the surface you'd say that doesn't look too good. But keep in mind San Diego has still played the fewest games in the ECHL. Some teams have played twice as many games. But rest assured, the Gulls will catch up and continue moving up in the standings.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
The Gulls picked up three out of a possible four points last week. San Diego finished its road trip Tuesday with an overtime loss against Las Vegas before beating Idaho in its home opener.
Oct. 28 @ Las Vegas:
The Gulls out-shot the Wranglers 21-9 in the first period, but Wranglers goalie Marc Magliarditi stood on his head keeping the game scoreless. San Diego finally broke through midway through the second on Greg Barber's first professional goal. Vegas quickly tied it 28 seconds later. Dennis Purdie gave the Gulls a 2-1 lead early in the third, but Vegas tied it again. In overtime the Gulls had the better chances, but the Wranglers needed only one chance to win it. Justin Kelly secured the Wranglers victory 2:54 into the extra session with a low wrist shot from the right circle.
Nov. 1 vs. Idaho:
San Diego scored five unanswered goals, then added an empty netter to double up the Steelheads 6-3, before a packed house at the Sports Arena. Idaho took a 1-0 lead early in the first, but from there it was all Gulls. Billy Tibbetts and Barber each knotted a pair, while Mark Pederson and Josh Gratton also found the twine. For Gratton, it was his first professional goal. Teams combined for 105 penalty minutes, 68 of which were assessed to the Blue and Orange.
THIS WEEK:
San Diego closes out its brief homestand with a pair of games against the Florida Everblades Friday and Saturday. It will be Florida's first-ever visit to the Sports Arena and the first time the Gulls face a team from the east. Friday's game starts at 7:35 p.m. and the first 5,000 fans will get a Gulls inaugural ECHL T-shirt, courtesy of Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino.
Saturday's tilt begins at 7:05 p.m. and will be televised live on Channel 4 San Diego. It will also be the fourth annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by San Diego Harley Davidson and the California Office of Traffic Safety. Fans are invited to bring a new, unwrapped stuffed toy to toss onto the ice after the Gulls score their first goal. The California Highway Patrol will donate all toys to underprivileged children throughout the San Diego community.
TEAM NOTES:
The Gulls are 8-0-1 all-time in home openers... Steve Martinson is 32-26-8 all-time against Idaho coach John Olver in the regular season. He's 355-100-26 against everyone else... San Diego scored three power-play goals Saturday after only scoring one in its first three games...
PLAYER NOTES:
