Welcome back! Slattengren's four points enough for Lynx in 6-4 win
January 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Led by the return of forward #19 Aaron Slattengren and his four-point night, the Augusta Lynx came back from a 3-1 1st period deficit to defeat the Charlotte Checkers on Tuesday in Augusta by a score of 6-4.
The 1st period was one the Lynx would like to forget, as Charlotte pumped in three goals, including two on the power play. The lone Lynx goal of the period was a beautiful give-and-go between #18 Igor Pohanka and #12 Ryan Dingle. Dingle, in his first game back from spending a month with Portland in the AHL, received a pass from Pohanka and slipped a backhand upstairs over Checkers goalie Matt Zaba. However, the Checkers outshot the Lynx 17-12 in the period, peppering Lynx goaltender #35 JP Levasseur.
The 2nd period was an entirely different story for the Lynx. The defense and the goaltending solidified and the Lynx cut into the deficit with a goal from #17 Jeremy Schenderling, who's first try on net was directed wide, but after a great hold in at the point by #15 Eric Lundberg, the puck went low to Slattengren who found Schenderling on the back door. The Lynx quickly tied the game at 3-3 as Slattengren's chance down low went off the post, but the rebound came right to #7 James Brannigan who swooped in and scored his first goal in a Lynx uniform. Charlotte's power play magic continued against the league's best penalty kill in the Lynx with another power play goal to make it 4-3 as Chris Capraro scored his 2nd of the night as the Checkers scored on their first three power plays of the evening. The Lynx would come right back with Slattengren's first goal of the night, which was a beautiful redirection after a shot from the point from Lundberg after a cross ice pass from #25 Adrian Veideman. Minutes later the Lynx comeback was complete as Pohanka got a pass from #5 Ken Scuderi, cruised in the zone and fed the puck to #20 Matt Auffrey down the right wing. With Zaba out of position, Auffrey fired a blast right under the crossbar for the first Lynx lead of the night at 5-4.
The 3rd period was more impressive Lynx defense with the lone goal coming to Slattengren. #9 Louis Goulet made the play happen by taking a pass from Auffrey, sliding around the back of the Checkers net and throwing a no look, blind pass to a wide-open Slattengren who slammed it in the backdoor for the 6-4 lead.
Slattengren's four-points were complimented by a goal by Dingle in his return and multiple-point nights from Pohanka, Lundberg, Veideman, and Auffrey.
