Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Idaho Steelheads 4-2 on Thursday night in front of 5,125 fans at the Orleans Arena. Aki Seitsonen's fifth goal of the season at 14:26 of the second period proved to be the game-winning tally for Las Vegas. Defensemen Sean Owens, Jason Krischuk and Aaron Power each scored in the victory. Las Vegas goalie Daniel Manzato stopped 22 of 24 Idaho shots, improving to 12-1-1 on the season. The same two teams play again on Friday night at the Orleans Arena at 7:05 pm.
Las Vegas scored the only goal in the first period. Defenseman Aaron Power sent a shot through traffic and into the back of the Idaho net for the 1-0 Las Vegas lead. The five-on-three power-play goal was assisted by Jason Jozsa and Peter Ferraro.
In the second period, the Wranglers stretched their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Jason Krischuk. The Wranglers defenseman skated up through center ice and blasted a shot into the net from the Idaho blueline at 4:04. Idaho countered with a power-play goal by defenseman TJ McElroy at 6:11, trimming the Wranglers lead to 2-1. Las Vegas regained a two-goal lead as Aki Seitsonen scored at the end of a penalty kill. Seitsonen's fifth goal of the season came at 14:26 of the period.
In the third period, Krischuk was whistled for a double minor (high sticking) giving Idaho their ninth power play of the game. The Steelheads capitalized on the extra-man advantage, trimming the Las Vegas lead to 3-2. Left wing Lance Galbraith netted his tenth goal of the season at 6:58. The Wranglers scored an empty-net goal with five seconds remaining, as Sean Owens notched his fifth goal of the season for the 4-2 victory.
The Wranglers and Steelheads meet for the final time this season at 7:05 pm at the Orleans Arena on Friday night. After a 6:00 pm game in Bakersfield on Sunday, Las Vegas will return home to host Stockton at 5:05 pm on New Year's Day at the Orleans Arena.
