
Awe Recalled to AHL Houston

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that defenseman Jon Awe has been recalled to the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League. In 14 games this season with the Gladiators, Awe has notched 5 goals and 5 assists for 10 points while accumulating 12 penalty minutes for Gwinnett.
Awe made his first trip of the season to Houston on November 17th. In 14 American Hockey League games with the Aeros, Awe notche a goal and 4 assists for 5 points. His only marker was an overtime game-winning power play goal on December 1st.
Awe was reassigned to Gwinnett and rejoined the Gladiators on December 19th and was in the lineup for a 5-3 loss to the Charlotte Checkers on December 20th. Awe scored 2 goals in the loss and added one more the following night against Pensacola.
Awe was named the ECHL Defenseman of the Year during the 2006-07 season with the Gladiators as he notched 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points in 60 games while setting a new league record among defensemen for most power play goals in a single season with 18 last year. He also represented the Gladiators in the 2007 ECHL All Star game where he set a new league record for hardest slap shot at 102.2 mph in the skills competition.
The Gladiators continue their fifth anniversary season on Friday, December 28th as they travel to Augusta to take on the Lynx at 7:35 p.m. at the James Brown Arean. Catch all the play-by-play action in Friday's game on WDUN, News Talk 550.
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
