Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades President & General Manager Craig Brush, along with Head Coach Gerry Fleming announced today that forward Derek Damon and goaltender Justin Peters have been reassigned to the club from the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League. In addition, goaltender Kevin Nastiuk was re-called to Albany and forward Mathieu Melanson has been called up to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.
Damon returns to the Everblades after spending just over a month with the River Rats. In 15 games the 27-year-old notched five points (2g, 3a) and six penalty minutes. The trip to the AHL was the second in the career of the Bangor, Maine native. Last season Damon participated in three games with the Lowell Lock Monsters, however did not register a point. Damon's first career AHL goal came at Bridgeport on November 25. The former University of Maine product returns to the Everblades where he began the season playing the 13 games and totaling 20 points (9g, 11a), which ranks fourth on the team in scoring.
Peters also makes his return to the Everblades after spending two weeks with the River Rats. The 21-year-old net-minder saw action in four games and posted a 3-0-0 record with a 3.16 goals against average and a .896 save percentage. The former 2nd round draft pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2004 played in 34 games with Albany last season, compiling a 10-18-1 record with a 3.26 GAA.
This season with the Everblades the Blyth, Ontario native holds a 10-4-1 record in 15 games with an ECHL fifth best GAA of 2.17 and a .933 save percentage. Earlier this season Peters earned ECHL Player of the Month honors for the month of October and picked up ECHL Goaltender of the Week honors for the week of November 26 - December 1.
Melanson heads to the AHL for the first time in his career after being called up by the Moose. The 22-year-old currently leads the Everblades in scoring with 34 points (19g, 15a) in 25 games. His goal total also leads the Everblades. Melanson, who earlier this month was selected to participate in the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game, is second in scoring among all ECHL rookies and leads all ECHL rookies in goals. Nastiuk returned to the River Rats after a brief stay with the Everblades during which he started two games, going 1-1-0 with a 2.53 GAA and a .900 save percentage.
