Kalamazoo Wings News Release
BRAMPTON, ON- Ludwig Blomstrand had his second consecutive multi-point night and notched the shootout winner in the sixth round as the Kalamazoo Wings skated past the Brampton Beast on Saturday night at the Powerade Centre.
For the second straight night, the Wings opened up the scoring while working on a first-period power play. Blomstrand controlled the puck at the top of the right circle and slid a pass to the back door to a waiting Alex Mallet, who tapped in his 11th goal on the season. It increased Mallet's point streak to seven games, setting a new season-high for a Wing.
Kalamazoo built upon their lead just sixty four seconds into period number two. Blomstrand corralled the puck at center ice, carried into the Brampton zone and took to the backhand to deposit one over the left pad of Trevor Cann.
Brampton showed plenty of fight in the second, as they began their come-from-behind push seven minutes later. After an initial try from Angelo Miceli was steered away by Joel Martin, the Beast crashed the goal and Chris Auger was able to lift a rolling puck over the left pad of Martin and into the goal.
Four minutes after Brampton halved the deficit, the equalizer came courtesy of Jeff Brown. Once again, the goal came on a follow-up chance from the Beast after Martin made a stop on a Steven Kaunisto try. Brown crashed the goal and slid the puck under Martin to deadlock the game at two.
The third period was highlighted by a series of chances from both clubs, with the Wings outshooting the Beast, 12-6, with neither team able to capitalize on their opportunities. The game headed to an extra frame for the second consecutive night.
The overtime session followed suit of the third period, as both teams were held scoreless, forcing a shootout.
After a scoreless two rounds of the shootout, Auger snapped one over the glove of Martin to force the Wings to score to keep the game alive. Mallet's number was called, and the forward snuck a shot past Cann to extend the shootout another round. Eventually it was Blomstrand in the sixth round who beat Cann with a stick-side move to seal the victory for Kalamazooo.
