Gameday: Adirondack vs. South Carolina

January 9, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight is the second meeting in consecutive nights for the Thunder and the South Carolina Stingrays of the South Division. Last night, the Thunder fell to the Stingrays 5-1 at the Civic Center, getting only a late second period tally from Dana Fraser. The Thunder and Stingrays will meet once more later in the season on Saturday, March 5 in South Carolina, the back end of a three-in-three for the Thunder.

LIEUTENANT DAN-A: Dana Fraser scored his fifth goal of the season in the second period of the Thunder's 5-1 defeat on Friday. The goal gave him points in back-to-back games and was his first goal since December 13 in Manchester. Fraser, a key member of the Thunder's penalty kill unit and a large contributor in the faceoff dots, is tied for third on the team amongst first year players in points, behind just Michael Kirkpatrick and Louick Marcotte.

ADIRONDACK ALUMS: A few familiar faces returned to the Glens Falls Civic Center last evening and nearly all of them had an impact for South Carolina in the win. Former Adirondack Phantom Andrew Rowe scored the game's first goal to give the Stingrays a 1-0 lead, while former Adirondack Flame Trevor Gillies made his presence felt in a scrap between he and Thunder defenseman Luke Curadi. Another ex-Flame, Brett Cameron, also contributed with an assist, while ex-Phantom Andrew Johnson was held scoreless.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE: Thunder defenseman Mike Bergin had the primary assist on Fraser's second period goal last evening for his fifth point of the season (1-4-5). Bergin was one of seven Thunder skaters not in the minuses last night and leads the team amongst active skaters with a +12 rating on the season.

HOME ON THE RANGE: The Thunder will enjoy the next three games at home at the Glens Falls Civic including a pair of home games next week. The Thunder will host Norfolk and Reading on Tuesday and Saturday respectively next week at the GFCC, where the Thunder have thrived this season. Adirondack leads the Eastern Conference with a .679 winning percentage, courtesy of a 9-4-1-0 record on home ice.

EVERYONE LOVES STINGRAYMOND: The Stingrays scored five or more goals for the seventh time in last night's win, giving Kent Simpson his first loss of the season in the process. Colin Mulvey had two goals while Jared Staal added a highlight reel tally late in the second period for the game's final goal. The Stingrays continued to receive high caliber goaltending, as Mark Dekanich turned aside 29 of 30 shots for his eighth victory of the season. South Carolina is now five points behind the Florida Everblades in the South Division standings and a point ahead of the Thunder in the conference standings.
