Steel Streak Snapped

January 9, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - The Idaho Steelheads' (16-16-5) saw their winning streak over the Utah Grizzlies (19-13-2) halted at six games on Saturday night, as Ryan Faragher's 26 saves backstopped the Grizzlies to a 3-1 win at Maverik Center. The Steelheads remain three points in back of the Grizzlies in the West Division.

Faragher's shutout bid was spoiled with 1:25 remaining in regulation, when Andrew Carroll drove hard to the net and popped in the rebound of a Taylor Peters wrist shot for his sixth of the season. Peters earned a point after missing five straight games and 14 of the prior 15 contests.

The Steelheads fell behind at 9:44 of the first period when TJ Syner jammed a puck past Jack Campbell at the right post, squeezing it through Campbell to end the goaltender's personal shutout streak at 181:21.

The Grizzlies added to that lead in the second period with their league-leading ninth shorthanded goal of the season. With the puck trickling back into the Idaho zone, Ryan Walters hopped off the Grizzlies' bench and chased after Zach Yuen on the forecheck. Walters stripped the puck away and drove in on the Steelheads net. Walters fired short-side, with Campbell making the initial save. Walters crashed into Campbell, and the puck slid to the back of the net.

With a delayed penalty pending on Yuen, it was deemed that he was responsible for the collision and the goal stood.

The Steelheads took eight penalties in the game and were largely successful on the penalty kill, but Shayne Taker's power play drive through traffic snuck through Campbell at 1:44 of the third period to extend the Utah lead to 3-0.

The Steelheads had opportunities in the third period to climb back in the game, particularly a lengthy 5-on-3 power play midway through the final frame. They were unable to convert, and went 0-for-4 on the power play for the night.

The Steelheads return home to face the Tulsa Oilers in a two-game set at CenturyLink Arena this Friday and Saturday. The Steelheads will be holding their Jayden Deluca Foundation Jersey Auction throughout the weekend. Friday's puck-drop is scheduled for 7:10pm MT, with the game available on radio on 1350AM KTIK and seen on CableOne and ECHLTV.
