Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - The Brampton Beast clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit to force overtime but Ludwig Blomstrand's goal in the sixth round of the shootout was the difference-maker as the Kalamazoo Wings topped the Beast 3-2 in the shootout at the Powerade Centre on Saturday night.
Chris Auger and Jeff Brown lit the lamp for the Beast in the second period and Trevor Cann rebounded from a shaky start to the game and finished strong and made 25 saves.
The Beast outshot the K-Wings 12-6 in the opening frame but Kalamazoo was the first to find the back of the net as Alex Mallet scored for the second straight game against the Beast, picking up his eleventh goal of the season on the power play at 12:07.
Ludwig Blomstrand made it 2-0 for Kalamazoo in the early moments of the second period, beating Trevor Cann just 1:04 into the frame for his third goal in the last two games.
The Beast picked up their play late in the second as Angelo Miceli walked out of the corner and sent a shot on goal. K-Wings starter Joel Martin made the first save but Auger was hacking away in the crease and squeezed one behind the goaltender at 13:07.
The Beast weren't finished there. Scott Jacklin started the rush with a shot from the top of the right wing circle. Martin kicked out the first attempt as well as the second try off the stick of Steven Kaunisto but Jeff Brown followed up on the play managed to beat the goaltender in tight for his eighth goal of the season at 17:13.
Kalamazoo upped the intensity in the third period but Trevor Cann kicked out all 12 shots he faced in the final frame to force the game into overtime.
After a back-and-forth five-minute three-on-three overtime, neither team was able to settle the score, pushing the game into a shootout for just the second time this season.
After Mike Vernace and Scott Howes failed to score in the first two rounds, Auger beat Martin to give the Beast the edge, before Alex Mallet beat Cann with the next shot to keep the shootout alive.
Brandon Marino, Steven Kaunisto and Reggie Traccitto were all denied by K-Wings goaltender Martin before Ludwig Blomstrand iced the game with a goal in the sixth round, giving the Wings their second win over the Beast in as many games.
