Fuel Sweep IceMen with 3-0 Shutout
January 9, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A banged-up Evansville IceMen squad ran into a hot goaltender Saturday night as Shane Owen and the Indy Fuel blanked the IceMen 3-0 to earn a weekend sweep.
Opposite from Friday night, the Fuel scored the game's first goal Saturday on an offensive zone faceoff win, when Ben Marshall fired a point shot that was tipped into the net by Adam Lepsansky with 4:21 left in the first period. Evansville outshot Indy 11-9 in the frame, as IceMen goalie Christoffer Bengtsberg made eight saves and fuel netminder Shane Owen stopped all 11 shots.
The Fuel added a short-handed goal to open their lead to 2-0 late in the second period on Evansville's third power play. Derek Roehl walked into the slot uncontested and ripped a shot past Bengtsberg for his first ECHL goal. The IceMen opened their shots advantage to 27-17, but Owen stood tall in net for Indy.
Roehl added a power play goal on the second of three Indy power plays in the final period to finish the scoring, guiding Owen to his first shutout of the season. He stopped all 32 shots in the contest. Bengtsberg made 23 saves in the loss.
The IceMen return home Wednesday for the first meeting of two with the Rapid City Rush at 6:15pm. Evansville then travels to Toledo Friday, before finishing the week at the Ford Center against the Quad City Mallards. The two home games are the final two in the month of January for the IceMen.
