ELMIRA, N.Y. - Two goals from Mark Anthoine and Matt Harlow, along with 42 saves by Doug Carr, fueled the Manchester Monarchs past the Elmira Jackals, 4-1, Saturday night at First Arena.
The Monarchs (22-12-0-3) outscored the Jackals (20-15-0-0) 10-2 in the weekend two-game series.
Manchester opened the scoring when Harlow scored his 1st goal of the season at 15:24 of the first period. Harlow tipped a Michael Boivin wrist shot in the low slot over Jackals goaltender, C.J. Motte, scoring against the team he was a part of to begin the 2015-16 season.
The teams played to a scoreless second period, but the action was furious. The middle frame saw a combined 11 penalties called for 45 minutes, with two fights and five power play chances.
Elmira evened the score when Garrett Klotz scored his 1st goal of the season at 2:07 of the third period. Klotz found a loose puck on the left hash mark, and roofed a shot over the glove of Monarchs goaltender, Doug Carr.
The Monarchs regained the lead at 6:05 when Mark Anthoine scored his 1st goal with the Monarchs. Anthoine took a pass from Harlow in the high slot and snapped a shot over the glove of Motte to make the game, 2-1.
Anthoine gave give the Monarchs a three-goal lead, scoring his second of the night at 7:38. While on a 3-on-3 rush, Anthoine skated towards the high slot from the right wing and sent a wrister that Motte got a piece of with his right arm, but the puck trickled into the net for the 3-1 lead.
Harlow capped the scoring, netting his second of the night with the Elmira net empty. Anthoine had a chance for a hat-trick with the puck on his stick in Elmira's crease, but decided to pass to a covered Boivin, but Harlow was there to clean things up and put the game on ice.
The Monarchs are back on the ice Saturday, Jan. 16 (7 p.m.), when they host the Norfolk Admirals on L.A. Kings Night. The Monarchs will wear special L.A. Kings inspired jerseys, and the first 4,000 fans through the doors will receive a commemorative poster.
