January 9, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Joe Perry's hat trick propelled the Fort Wayne Komets (18-10-2) to a 7-4 victory over the host Quad City Mallards (16-15-3) Friday night.
With the win, the Komets opened up a three point lead over the second place Mallards in the race for the top spot in the ECHL's Midwest Division.
The Komets put the game away in the third period after emerging from the second period already in the lead 4-3. At 8:13 of the third, Perry completed his hat trick and stretched the gap to 5-3 with a point blank power play goal. Garret Thompson scored the sixth Komet goal from the edge of the crease at 12:55 of the third and, after Sam Warning's breakaway goal briefly renewed Mallard hopes one minute later, Thompson would cap off the win by scoring an empty net goal with just 91 seconds remaining.
The Komets came out of the middle frame on top even though the Mallards had twice battled from behind to tie the score in the second. The Mallards were on the power play when Austin Coldwell evened the game at one from the high slot just a minute and 17 seconds int o the period. A mere 45 seconds later Perry produced the equalizer with his second goal, a shot that broke through Mallard goaltender Brody Hoffman. The Mallards' Matt Carey deadlocked the contest at three from close range at 9:18 of the second, but a one timer from Shawn Szydlowski- who added two assists- out of the left wing circle would put Fort Wayne back in front for good at the 14:23 mark.
The Komets spent most of the evening in the lead after Perry opened the scoring from the side of the net at 8:37 of the first period. Jamie Schaafsma- who also had two assists- walked across the goalmouth to make it 2-0 at 13:19 of the first. The Mallards clawed back into the game when Kevin Henderson scored the first Quad City goal from the slot with 44 seconds left in the first but the Komets would eventually pull away.
The Mallards earlier Friday activated defenseman Kevin Gibson- who played Friday evening- from injured reserve and placed forward Zach Pochiro on 21-day injured reserve retroactive to December 28.
The Mallards and Komets meet again Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at the iWireless Center. After that game fans who bring their skates can join the Flock on the ice for another B100 Skate with the Mallards.
