Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings fell to the Scranton/WB RailRiders, 6-5, in a back-and-forth affair Friday night. The Wings held a 4-1 lead in the third inning, and RHP Jose Ureña turned in a quality start on the mound. But the Railriders had five solo home runs and won their first game of the series against Rochester.
The Wings hopped on the board first Friday night for the second time in four games against Scranton/WB. In the bottom of the first inning, RF Nomar Mazara smacked a 386-foot home run that flew off of his bat at 108.6 MPH, his first since 5/25 against TOL, to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Scranton/WB responded with a run in the top of the third inning, tying the game on a sacrifice fly out from SS Oswald Peraza that plated 2B Jesús Bastidas.
The Wings quickly retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning, tacking on two runs to give Rochester a 3-1 lead. 1B Matt Adams collected an RBI for the third game in a row after a two-base error brought in CF Derek Hill and 2B Jake Alu. Mazara followed him up with an RBI double, his second extra base hit of the day, to give the Wings a 4-1 advantage. Scoring continued in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run from RailRiders' C Carlos Narvaez, moving the lead to 4-2.
Scranton/WB went on to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning thanks to back-to-back solo home runs from Peraza and CF Elijah Dunham. With another solo home run from 3B Jaime Westbrook to lead off the top of the seventh inning, the RailRiders took a 5-4 lead and sat ahead for the first time Friday night. The lead was short lived, as Alu came back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double to left field that drove in Hill and tied the game at 5-5.
The RailRiders reclaimed the lead in the top of the ninth inning, snapping RHP Gerson Moreno's league-leading 11 consecutive scoreless appearances with a solo home run by RF Michael Hermosillo. The Wings were set down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning and fell for the first time this series, 6-5.
RHP Jose Ureña *started his eighth game of the season for Rochester, working six innings and earning a quality start. He had a no decision after allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking none. Three Wings relievers came in out of the bullpen, working the final three innings, allowing three runs off of four hits while striking out two batters. RHP *Gerson Moreno (3-4, 2.59) took the loss, while LHP D.J. Snelten (1-3, 4.76) earned the win.
Rochester finished the game 3-for-4 on ABS Challenges, while the RailRiders went 0-for-3.
RF Nomar Mazara is Friday night's Diamond Pro Player of the Game after he went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and a single, driving in two RBI in the contest. Mazara collected his first long ball since 5/25 off of a 108.3 MPH, which is tied for his hardest-hit home run since 4/26/22 with El Paso (112.0).
The Red Wings will look to bounce back against Scranton/WB tomorrow night, with RHP Joan Adon taking the mound against LHP Tanner Tully. First Pitch Tuesday is set for 6:45 pm.
