Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins sign Tommy Goebel

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed right wing Tommy Goebel to an American Hockey League contract, it was announced Thursday by Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant General Manager Chuck Fletcher.

Goebel, 23, led the Ohio State Buckeyes with 21 goals and 36 points last season - both career highs. One of the Buckeyes' alternate captains, Goebel was named the recipient of the Robert 'Bobby' Brown award as the team's most valuable player following his senior season. He finished the season in the top 18 nationally in goals per game and power-play goals (9).

At the conclusion of the college season, Goebel joined the Rochester Americans (AHL) on an amateur tryout contract. He recorded five points (2+3) in five games with the Americans.

A native of Parma, Ohio, Goebel split his collegiate career between Ohio State and Michigan State, combining for 115 points (54+61) in 147 games. He was an honorable mention selection to the CCHA All-Rookie Team following the 2003-04 season, during which he recorded 32 points (15+17) in 35 games with the Spartans.
