Rivermen Announce 2008-09 Schedule
August 7, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen will open the 2008-09 home portion of the season on Saturday, October 11 against the West Division's newest team, the Iowa Chops, as the American Hockey League released the schedule for its 73rd season of play today.
This will be Peoria's fourth season in the American Hockey League as the top affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. New head coach Davis Payne will take over behind the bench after serving as assistant coach last season. Payne led the Alaska Aces to the ECHL's Kelly Cup Championship as head coach in 2006 and followed that season by being named ECHL Coach of the Year in 2007.
Peoria will bookend opening weekend with a pair of road games Friday at Iowa and Sunday at the Quad City Flames. Saturday night's home debut against the Chops is slated for 7 pm. The Chops are the top farm club of the Anaheim Ducks, playing last year as the Portland Pirates and bowing in the Eastern Conference Final to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.
The Lake Erie Monsters make its only appearance of the season October 25 and 26 to kick off a six-game home stand that features a Halloween home game against the Flames and the first of two appearances from the Manitoba Moose on Sunday, November 2 featuring 2008 AHL MVP Jason Krog.
Thirty of Peoria's 40 home games are on weekend dates (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).
"We're excited about the upcoming season both on and off the ice," said Rivermen General Manager of Hockey Operations Kevin McDonald. "Thirty weekend games allow us to continue showcasing the family-oriented entertainment our fans love, while on the ice we have a young returning core of players who really impressed last season and some great young prospects. Plus with a new head coach in Davis Payne and under the umbrella of SCP Worldwide and the St. Louis Blues, there's a lot to be enthusiastic about."
Other highlights include the first visit to Peoria by defending Calder Cup Champions the Chicago Wolves on Friday, December 5; a New Year's Eve clash with the Milwaukee Admirals; a St. Valentine's Day rematch with the Wolves February 14; and the lone appearances of the Hamilton Bulldogs November 22 and Rochester Americans February 15.
Peoria's longest home stands of the season each measure six games, with the first starting October 25 through November 8 and the second from February 14 through 25. Peoria will take to the road for a pair of five-game stretches January 16 through 30 and March 18 through 24.
Start times for this season are 7 pm Monday through Saturday, and 3 pm Sunday with the following exceptions: Sunday, November 2; Sunday, December 21; Sunday, December 28; Wednesday, December 31; and Sunday, January 11. All of the aforementioned games are 5 pm start times.
