Admirals Release 2008-09 Regular Season Schedule
August 7, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Today, Norfolk Admirals Vice President Joe Gregory announced the Admirals' 2008-09 regular season schedule. The Admirals will begin their quest for the 2009 Calder Cup by hosting the Hershey Bears on October 10 and 11 at Norfolk Scope Arena. A complete regular season schedule is attached to this press release and may also be found online at norfolkadmirals.com.
The 2008-09 season marks the twentieth campaign of Admirals hockey. It also marks the Admirals' ninth season as a member of the American Hockey League and their second season as the top minor league affiliate of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.
"We are very excited to get the twentieth season of Admirals hockey underway," said Gregory. "The sense of anticipation for the upcoming season generated from the players the Lightning and Admirals have signed during the past several weeks, our new and energetic coaching staff, and the state-of-the-art video board Scope will be installing in the coming weeks has been tremendous."
"Our staff has been hard at work putting plans together to make the twentieth season of Admirals hockey one of the most exciting thus far. October 10 couldn't be here soon enough!"
The season-opening two-game set against the Bears will mark the eleventh time the Admirals have opened the regular season at home and the first time since the 2005-06 season. After hosting the Bears, the Admirals will hit the road for five consecutive games against Western Conference opponents - including their first ever games against the Lake Erie Monsters, Hamilton Bulldogs and Rockford IceHogs.
The IceHogs will make their first visit to Scope on November 7 and 8 and their lineup will likely feature several former Admirals. The IceHogs are currently the top minor league affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Admirals were the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate from 2000-01 to 2006-07.
Norfolk's longest road trip of the season takes place in mid-November with a seven-game stretch against Atlantic Division opponents. Following that trip, the Admirals will return home for three games at Scope during the week of Thanksgiving.
Norfolk will enjoy a nine-game, 24-day stretch of home games in January, tying the Admirals record for most consecutive home games. That homestand will also kick off a stretch of nine straight Friday home games from January 9 to March 6. That nine-game Friday stretch will feature nine different opponents.
The stretch run toward the playoffs will likely feature several heated battles, as 16 of the final 17 games of the regular season will pit the Admirals against their East Division rivals. Norfolk's final regular season home game occurs against the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday, April 4. The Admirals then close out the regular season with a five-game road trip concluding on Sunday, April 12 in Philadelphia.
The home schedule features 18 Friday games, 13 Saturday games, eight Wednesday games and one Thursday game. All 40 Admirals regular season home games will begin at 7:15 p.m.
All eighty Admirals games will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1310. For a complete regular season schedule, please visit the Admirals' website at www.norfolkadmirals.com. The Admirals will release their promotional schedule as the season approaches.
