
Whitecaps Top Captains 4-3 in 18 Innings

Lake County Captains News Release
(Comstock Park, MI)- West Michigan walked off with a 4-3 victory against Lake County in 18 innings on Monday night. The Captains scored two runs to tie the game in the third inning, but then neither team scored until the seventeenth inning. Both teams scored in their respective half's of the seventeenth to push it to an eighteenth. West Michigan won on a bases loaded walk.
West Michigan put up two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Dominic Ficociello tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harold Castro. The score was 1-0. Later in the inning, Willy Adames was hit-by-a-pitch. He advanced to second base on a passed ball and to third on an error. Adames scored on a single by Jose Zambrano. The score was 2-0 West Michigan.
Lake County came right back in the top half of the third inning to tie the game. The Captains used three singles including an RBI base hit from Clint Frazier to tie the score. The captains also scored a run in the inning on an error. After three innings the game was tied at 2-2.
In the 17th inning Lake County took the lead. The Captains had runners on first and second and got an RBI single from Brian Ruiz. The score was 3-2. In the bottom half of the inning, with Ruiz on the mound (who started the game at DH) West Michigan tied the game. With a runner on second Jose Betacourt singled home the tying run. Ruiz gets out of the inning and the game remained tied at 3-3 going to the 18th.
RHP Robbie Aviles (0-1) started the ballgame for the Captains. Aviles did not earn a decision. Aviles pitched seven innings and allowed two runs, one was earned on four hits. Robbie walked three and fanned three. Aviles also hit a batter. Kerry Doane entered in relief and pitched three innings of scoreless baseball. Doane allowed just two hits and a walk. Doane struck out two. Trevor Frank allowed one hit, one walk and a strikeout in his one inning of work. From there the Captains used five more relievers including two position players. The loss went to LF Cody Ferrell (0-1)
RHP Jonathon Crawford (1-1) started for West Michigan. Crawford did not get a decision. He pitched six innings and allowed four hits, two runs only one was earned. Crawford walked one and struck out six. West Michigan used five pitchers and the win went to RHP Will LaMarche (1-0) after just one inning of work.
The Captains will remain on the road Tuesday in Comstock Park, Michigan to play game two of a three game series. The Captains will start RHP Dace Kime (0-4, 8.89) and the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Buck Farmer (3-2, 2.12). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.
