Dragons Post Second Straight Shutout Victory, Win 1-0
May 6, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.-The Dayton Dragons posted their second straight shutout victory and fifth shutout win of the season as they defeated the Great Lakes Loons 1-0 on Tuesday night. The win was the Dragons third straight and improved their record to 19-12. They remain in first place, one-half game ahead of the West Michigan Whitecaps.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Wright (2-1) was outstanding, tossing five and one-third innings of shutout baseball to earn the win. He allowed five hits but no walks and struck out six. Wright retired the first two batters in the each of the first five innings.
Joel Bender replaced Wright in the sixth and worked out of a mild jam before giving way to Ryan Kemp with one out in the seventh. Kemp worked out of a similar jam and then tossed a scoreless eighth inning, stranding the tying run at third base. Alejandro Chacin gave up a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth but retired the next three hitters to earn his third save.
The Dragons scored the game's only run in the second inning when Joe Hudson lined a double to the left field corner, took third on a single with two outs by Julio Morillo, and scored on Carlton Daal's single off the glove of the second baseman. The Dragons did not have a base runner after the third inning but relied on their outstanding pitching.
The Dragons dominance over the Loons continued. Dayton has beaten Great Lakes in all five meetings this season, allowing a total of four runs in those five games.
The Dragons finished with six hits by six different players. Tanner Rahier had one hit to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games, the longest of the year for a Dayton player.
The Dragons close out their six-game road trip on Wednesday morning against the Loons at 10:35 a.m. Sal Romano (3-1, 3.00) will start for Dayton. Great Lakes will counter with Zachary Bird (1-4, 5.22). The next home game is Thursday against Fort Wayne at 7:00 at Fifth Third Field.
All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
