Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Dane Phillips delivered an RBI single, and four Fort Wayne TinCaps (13-18) pitchers combined on a six-hit 1-0 shutout of the Lansing Lugnuts (15-16) in front of a Grand Slam School Day crowd of 6,268 at Cooley Law School Stadium.
In his first start of the season, Fort Wayne's Kyle Lloyd tallied four strikeouts in his four innings of work, finishing one frame shy of the minimum to earn the win. That allowed Justin Livengood (Win, 2-1) to take the credit, with the reliever giving up three hits and a walk over the next 2 2/3 innings.
The only run of the day came on a fourth-inning liner to right by catcher Phillips, victimizing Lansing starter Shane Dawson (Loss, 0-1).
The TinCaps threatened to stretch the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs, but Lansing reliever Alberto Tirado struck out the next three batters to work out of the jam.
The Lugnuts were able to put the potential tying run at second base in the ninth inning, but Fort Wayne's Nick Mutz (Save, 3) retired Dickie Joe Thon on a sharp comebacker.
In the loss, Lugnuts catcher Jorge Saez went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. The Miami native has reached base in all twelve games he has played in 2014. Reliever Brady Dragmire worked two innings, allowing just two hits and extending his scoreless streak to 9.0 innings.
The Lugnuts and TinCaps will play the rubber match of the three-game set on a Hump Day Wednesday night, featuring Humphrey the Camel. Lansing left-hander Matt Dermody (0-0 4.50) is set to make his second start of the season at 7:05 p.m., while righty Coby Cowgill (2-0, 1.93) starts for Fort Wayne.
