Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
South Bend, Ind. - Solid pitching and timely hitting resulted in the fifth straight win for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) on Tuesday night, as they defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks), 3-2. Jake Faria followed his one-hit shutout of South Bend in his last start with five more shutout innings to earn the victory.
Faria (2-1) only allowed one hit for a second consecutive start against South Bend, and earned his second straight victory. He struck out five batters to counter a career-high three free passes. Brad Schreiber struck out four in the sixth and seventh before giving way to Jorge Rodriguez, who picked up the save despite allowing two runs.
Yoel Araujo put Bowling Green in front with a solo home run in the third. With one out, he sent Blake Perry's fastball high over the left-field wall, and into the fifth row for his third home run of the season. Two of those homers have been hit off of Perry. It gave the Hot Rods an early 1-0 edge.
Two more runs came across for the Hot Rods in the sixth. Juniel Querecuto led off with an infield single on the artificial turf, and moved up to second base on when Kean Wong followed with a sharp single to right field. Johnny Field laid down a bunt to move them to second and third, and the Silver Hawks elected to intentionally walk Armando Araiza to face Ty Young. The choice proved costly, as Young singled to left field to drive home Querecuto. Pat Blair would follow with a single through the left side that plated Wong, and it extended the Hot Rods lead to 3-0.
Three straight singles in the eight pulled one run back for South Bend. Andrew Velazquez came around to score as Joe Munoz singled him home, but Rodriguez finished the inning with three strikeouts. In the ninth, Michael Perez led off with a double and would later score on a failed pick-off attempt by Rodriguez. The tying run, Breland Almadova, would reach third base, but a groundball off the bat of Jamie Westbrook went to Young, and he threw Westbrook out to end the game.
Perry (1-2) allowed all three Bowling Green runs on seven hits to be handed the loss for South Bend.
The win gives the Hot Rods their longest winning-streak of the season at five games, and they'll go for their second consecutive series sweep on Wednesday morning. First pitch is slated for 9:35 a.m. CT, and fans can tune into the action beginning at 9:20 a.m. CT with the Pepsi Pre-Game Show on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket, the flagship home of the Hot Rods.
