Clinton LumberKings News Release
Burlington, IA - The Clinton LumberKings saw their ninth inning comeback hopes end on a caught stealing at second base.
Field Umpire Andrew Chesnut called out Burt Reynolds on a stolen base attempt, and the Burlington Bees snapped their five-game losing streak with a one-run win Monday at Community Field, 4-3.
The call at second was the first of two questionable calls by Chesnut, the other coming on an inning-ending double play in the sixth. Down 4-3 in the sixth, Clinton had a chance to tie with runners at the corners and one out. Ian Miller appeared to beat the throw from second, but Chesnut punched out Miller to end the inning.
Clinton took a 1-0 lead in the first, thanks to four straight two-out walks issued by Bees righty Victor Alcantara. Joe DeCarlo drew the fourth free pass, forcing in Jack Reinheimer from third.
L'Kings right-hander Carlos Misell recorded the first two batters in the first, before loaded the bases with three walks of his own. Misell managed to escape on fielder's choice, but ran into trouble in the next three innings.
The Bees (16-14) took the lead in the second. Kody Eaves snuck a two-run double inside first base for his first hit of the series. Tyler O'Neill tied the game at two with his second home run of the series, and sixth of the season, with two outs in the third, but Burlington answered again in the bottom half. Trevor Gretzky grounded an RBI triple to right, putting the Bees back in front 3-2.
Burlington made it 4-2 in the fourth, despite not recording a hit. Two LumberKings errors allowed the Bees to plate their fourth run, proving to be the game-winner.
Clinton cut their deficit back to one in the fifth. Jeff Zimmerman hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left.
But the L'Kings bat were held in check by three right-handed relievers the rest of the way.
The loss dropped Clinton (15-15) back to .500. The one-run loss was Clinton's sixth in eight one-run games.
Misell (4-2) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) over 3.2 innings. He walked a career-high five batters and struck out six. Michael Smith (2-1) picked up the win for the Bees and allowing two runs in three relief innings.
The LumberKings wrap up their three-game set tomorrow against the Bees (16-14) at 6:30 PM CT. Righty Jose Flores (0-0) will make his second start for Clinton. The broadcast can be heard in its entirety on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and lumberkings.com.
