Clinton hands Burlington fifth straight loss

Burlington, IA - The Clinton LumberKings continued their hot road trip Monday evening in Burlington. Clinton knocked off the Burlington Bees 5-1 at Community Field and got a dominant outing from left-hander Eddie Campbell who threw six innings for the second time in 2014.

Campbell, coming off of a career-high six-walk outing, allowed just two hits over six innings, the only blemish being Chad Hinshaw's one-out solo home run in the first. Following Hinshaw's blast, Campbell retired the next 11 batters before allowing a leadoff double to Angel Rosa in the fifth. The southpaw then walked Ryan Dalton, giving the Bees their best scoring chance of the night. Up came Trevor Gretzky, son of NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, but Campbell helped out his own cause, gloving Gretzky's attempted sac bunt up the third base line, scooping the ball to Joe DeCarlo for the force out at third. The former Virginia Tech Hokie picked up his fourth strikeout for the second out in the fifth, and after an infield single, got Kody Eaves on a fly out to end the threat.

Clinton's offense, which entered the game third in the Midwest League with a .263 batting average, went quietly in the first two innings against Bees right-hander Clint Sharp. The L'Kings did finally get to Sharp for one run in the third. After Corey Simpson led off with a walk and Jeff Zimmerman singled to right, Zach Shank scored Simpson from third on a fielder's choice to third.

The LumberKings grabbed the lead for good in the fourth. With winds gusting out to left, Tyler O'Neill snuck a deep drive inside the left-field foul pole for his fifth home run, giving Clinton a 2-1 lead.

After Campbell's nerve-wracking fifth, the lefty settled in with a 1-2-3 sixth. The 22-year-old picked up his fifth and sixth strikeouts in the process and departed after allowing just one run on two hits.

Clinton (15-14) busted out for three runs in the seventh, extending their lead to four. Jack Reinheimer provided the big blow with one out and two L'Kings in scoring position, delivering a 2-run double to left. Reinheimer moved up to third base on a wild pitch and scored on O'Neill's sacrifice fly to left-center, finishing out the scoring.

Tommy Burns relieved Campbell (2-1) and sat down each of the six batters he faced. Emilio Pagan came on for a non-save situation in the ninth and pitched around a leadoff single.

Burlington's Sharp (0-3) was tagged with his third loss, despite allowing just two runs in six innings.

L'Kings outfielder Burt Reynolds extended his hitting streak to nine with a single in the sixth.

Campbell now has two of Clinton's three quality starts this season.
