Wheeling Nailers News Release
Five Different Nailers Light the Lamp Including a Pair of Shorthanded Tallies
The Wheeling Nailers picked up an impressive 5-2 win on the road at the Dayton Bombers to move all alone into 2nd place in the ECHL North Division. Five different Nailers scored goals for the second consecutive game. Wheeling remains perfect in regulation on the road at 6-0-3 as their overall mark improves to 12-2-5.
Curtis Darling was 1:24 away from his second shutout of the season when Dayton lit the lamp to break up the bid. The Bombers scored again with 49 seconds remaining. Before that Darling was terrific turning away 43 consecutive Bombers shots.
Bryan Ewing and Matt Grennier both registered shorthanded tallies in the 2nd period marking the second time this year the Nailers have scored a pair of shorthanded goals. Eric Johnson scored his first Wheeling Nailers goal early in the 1st period. Jon Grecu scored an even-strength goal in the 2nd. And Andrew Lord capped the Nailers scoring with a power play goal in the 3rd period and is the hottest Nailers scorer as he now has goals in 3 straight games.
Wheeling was shorthanded for 11 minutes of the 2nd period with several penalties including one minute down by 2 men but Curtis Darling rose to the occasion to make 16 saves in the frame and the penalty kill raced up to get both of the shorthanded goals. Wheeling led after 2 periods 4-0 even though they were being outshot 32-17.
On the night the Bombers outshot the Nailers 45-22 but Wheeling made the most of their opportunities on Bomber netminder Tyler Plante.
Wheeling is 3-1-0 vs. the Dayton Bombers on the year and another matchup between these two North Division rivals takes place Saturday night at 7:30 at the Nutter Center in Dayton.
The Nailers next home game is Saturday, December 13 vs. the Reading Royals at 7:35 and Wheeling will also host Reading on Sunday, December 14 at 6:05 with a post-game skate with the team and Santa after the game for those who bring their skates and gloves.
