The Mississippi Sea Wolves needed eight shootout rounds to get past the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 on Friday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Gwinnett got three points from Brad Schell in the shootout loss as the Gladiators fall to 8-6-4 on the season with the loss.
For the second straight game, the Gladaitors skated to a scoreless tie through the first period. Mississippi outshot the Gladiators by a 10-8 margin with both teams unable to score on their only power play chance in the period.
Gwinnett broke the scoreless tie on Andy Brandt's second goal of the season. Trailing a Gladiators odd man rush, Brandt was able to pick up a rebound in the slot flick the puck past Mississippi netminder Ryan Munce for the marker. Schell and Jordan Fox collected the assists on the goal for Gwinnett at 8:12 of the second period.
Mississippi equalized the contest at 1-1 at the 13:16 mark of the second period. Mike Berry was able to slip past the Gladiators defense at the Gwinnett blueline and beat Gladiators netminder Kevin Nastiuk for the goal. Alexandre Parent collected an assist on the goal for the Sea Wolves.
Mississippi took a 2-1 lead on the Gladiators just 2:44 into the third period. In a pile up in front of Nastiuk, Pat Oliveto was able to find the loose puck and flick it past the netminder for the goal. Chase trull and Jeremy Hall posted the assists on the goal.
Gwinnett answered with a pair of goals on the power play later in the period. Fox, parked on the off wing, took a rink wide pass on a 5-on-3 advantage and punched the puck past Munce for the power play goal. Bruce Graham and Schell set up the power play goal at 11:50 of the third period.
Schell regained the lead for Gwinnett with the remaining time of the power play advantage at 12:27 of the third period. Finding a loose puck in the right wing circle, Schell took advantage of a pile up in front of Munce as he whipped the puck past the out of position netminder for the goal. Jeff Mason had an assist on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Mississippi sent the contest to overtime with their third goal of the game with 1:03 left in the third period. Ryan Menei was able to slip into the slot and slide the puck through the legs of Nastiuk for the tying marker. Ryan Cruthers and Justin Coutu added the assists on the goal for the Sea Wolves.
After a scoreless overtime period, Nastiuk and Munce pushed the shootout to eight rounds before Mississippi won the contest on Mike Berry's shootout tally.
