Florida Everblades News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Florida Everblades (14-3-2) picked up a tie in the standings after the Trenton Devils (6-11-3) collected a 4-3 shootout win over the visiting Blades at Sovereign Bank Arena. The win was Trenton's second over the Everblades during their nine-game road trip, and just their third win on home ice this season.
The opening period of play featured fast paced action as the teams battled end-to-end for several minutes of time throughout the opening frame. On the scoreboard, the Devils carried a 2-1 goal advantage back to the locker room.
Trenton opened the scoring at 7:02 when Jim Henkel tallied his third goal of the season with a quick wrist shot from the right circle that beat Everblades goaltender Anton Khudobin low on the stick side. Florida counter-punched at 11:28 to tie the score at one on Kevin Baker's 15th goal of the year with the Everblades on the power play.
After Yannick Tifu chased down a loose puck in the left corner, he fed a pass behind the net to Ryan Lang who found Baker alone in the right circle. Baker wasted no time getting off a shot, firing the puck up over the left shoulder of Devils net-minder Charlie Effinger and under the cross bar.
Trenton however responded back to regain the lead 2-1 at 16:29 when Tyler Burton collected a rebound off the pads of Khudobin at the right post to notch his eighth goal of the year.
The Everblades countered in the second period outscoring the Devils 2-1 sending the teams tied 3-3 to the locker rooms. It was the Everblades that scored the period's first two goals as Mathieu Roy evened the score 2-2 at 4:19 of the period with a good wrist shot from the high slot that sailed past Effinger and into the net for Roy's fourth goal of the season. The play began with a nice play by new comer Matt Auffrey who deflected an outlet pass by Trenton right to Roy.
Florida grabbed the lead in the contest with their second power play goal of the night when Auffrey banged home a rebound at the left side of the crease off the leg pad of Effinger for his fifth of the season and first as an Everblade. Aaron Brocklehurst and Tifu notched the assists on the goal.
The Devils however cashed in on a power play goal of their own scoring with just 10 seconds remaining in the period when Matt Cohen collected a loose puck in the left circle after a Khudobin save, and skated to the slot before firing the puck into the open net for his second goal of the year.
Neither team tallied in the third period as the Devils stymied the Everblades and out-shot them 12-3. Florida had a quality opportunity late in the third after a five-minute major penalty was assessed to Jeremy Akeson, but the Everblades could not find a way to tally the game-winner in regulation or overtime.
In the shootout, the Devils picked up goals by Eric Castonguay and Brad Snetsinger in the first and third rounds, while the Everblades failed to score on either of their four attempts.
Khudobon picked up credit for a tie seeing his record go to 9-1-1 on the year after making 38 saves in regulation and overtime, while Effinger improved to 3-5-1 by stopping 25 of 28 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished out the night 2-of-5 while the Devils closed out the game 1-of-6.
