Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, NC. - The Charlotte Checkers continue their scoring struggles at home as they dropped another contest to the South Carolina Stingrays by a score of 5-1.

The Stingrays got on the board first when South Carolina forward Jeff Corey snuck behind the defense of the Checkers and received a nice pass from Viktor Dovgan and slid the puck between the legs of Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis at 6:47. With the Stingrays up 1-0 they would strike again but this time they were on the power play. Dovgan flipped a rebound off a Nate Kiser point shot past Jakaitis at 16:13. This gave South Carolina a 2-0 advantage after twenty minutes of action.

During the second period, the Stingrays extended their lead on the power play after defenseman Zach Tarkir wristed a shot that deflected over the pad of Jakaitis and into the net at 13:46 putting up South Carolina 3-0. Later, South Carolina scored their fourth goal of the game when defenseman Brad Farynuk blasted a one-timer home at 17:20. The period would end by a score of 4-0 in favor the Stingrays.

Checkers defenseman Brian Deeth scored the only Checkers goal of the contest when he fired a shot that beat Stingrays goalie Brian Goepfert high over the catching glove at 16:01. Despite the initial rush of momentum the Stingrays tallied another goal and this time it was Michael Dubuc at 19:25. This solidified the victory as the Checkers dropped the home game by a score of 5-1.
