Walleye Roll Over Chiefs At Home, 5-2

Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - After winning two games on the road and stunning its hosts this week, the Walleye extended its franchise-best win streak to five games. They returned home on Saturday and were red-hot right from the start looking to make it six straight on their home ice.

Lucas County Arena erupted when Evan Rankin scored less than two minutes into the start of the game. He took a deflected pass in front of the net and hesitated just long enough for the defense to give him an opening. He then took a wide-open shot between the legs of goaltender Kris Mayotte for the goal.

Rankin scored minutes later to double the Toledo lead. After a dump-in to the zone, he faked left behind the net, then went right and shot over the netminder for the wrap-around score. Rankin's second goal gave him the team lead with 12 goals for the season.

Midway through the first period, Rankin had an opportunity to score for the natural hat trick, but could not settle the pass. However, JC Sawyer would deliver for the three goal cushion. Johnstown took a penalty to eliminate its power play chance, and would pay seconds later on the 4-on-4. Sawyer collected a loose deflection in front and threw a hard wrister over the stick hand of Mayotte.

Johnstown made the second period a different story by cutting the score to 3-2, but the Walleye would answer to put the contest out of reach. To open the third, Chris Robertson passed over to the crease where Bryan Ewing hit an off-balanced one-timer between the legs of a sliding Mayotte. The goal came 54 seconds into the period. The Walleye would make it 5-2, the final score, after a misplay by Johnstown's goalie allowed Adam Hobson to score.

The Walleye are off until next Saturday when they travel to Cincinnati. They return home on Sunday, December 27 to host Johnstown at 7:00 pm.
