Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night meeting, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Stockton Thunder took the ice at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for the finale of their three-game set. The Salmon Kings started David Shantz in net, while the Thunder countered with Andrew Perugini.

Victoria scored the opening goal in the contest at the 5:35 mark of the first period on the power play. Defensemen Jimmy Sharrow cut past a Stockton player in the slot then fired a wrist shot past the blocker of Perugini for his fifth goal of the season. The Salmon Kings extended their lead to 2-0 while shorthanded as Olivier Filion sprung Captain Wes Goldie on a breakaway. Goldie would fire the puck over top of the net, but the puck would bounce high of the end glass and bounced directly back into the crease where Goldie would tip it out of the air and into the net. Victoria would capitalize on the power play again in the opening period when Patrick Coulombe redirected Sharrow's blast from the blueline past Perugini. It was Coulombe's fifth goal of the season and would secure the Salmon Kings a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Stockton would get on the board at 2:42 mark of the middle frame. Daryl Marcoux fired a long shot from the blueline that beat the right pad of Shantz. After Thunder forward Kelly Czuy ran Salmon Kings' goaltender David Shantz, Victoria's Glenn Fisher would step between the pipes for the Kings. The Thunder climbed closer mere moments after Fisher's entrance into the game when Jason Pitton flipped a shot though the goaltender's legs. Stockton would pour on the pressure after the Pitton goal, but the Salmon Kings would notch the next goal. At the 16:03 mark Randall Gelech wristed a shot towards the Stockton net that deflected off a Thunder defender and over the glove hand of Perugini. Gelech's sixth goal of the campaign would re-establish the Salmon Kings two-goal lead as they held a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes.

While on the power play the Thunder closed the gap to one goal just 2:40 into the third period. Off a Jason Pitton shot from the left face-off circle, Judd Blackwater tipped in his 12th marker of the season over the glove of Fisher. A last minute sprawling save by goaltender Fisher along with two other Salmon Kings players highlighted a great defensive effort in the third period as the Salmon Kings held on for the one goal victory and series sweep. Salmon Kings 4 Thunder 3.

Victoria went 2/6=33.3% on the power play, while Stockton was 1/4=25.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Thunder 30-22.

The Salmon Kings complete their eight-game home stand as they host the Alaska Aces on Sunday, December 27th starting at 5:05, and Monday, December 28th with puck drop at 7:05 p.m. Following Sunday's game the Salmon Kings present their second of three "Skate with the Salmon Kings" for 2009-10 season. Skates will be available to rent through the City of Victoria by donation. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
