Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers in the shootout, 3-2, on Friday evening before a crowd of 6,285 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
After a scoreless first period for both clubs, Wranglers center Jeff Hazelwood recorded his first goal of the season and the first point of the game at 9:38 in the second period. Defenseman Robbie Bina sent a pass to Hazelwood in the neutral zone, and Hazelwood carried it over the blue line and through traffic before throwing the puck up into the top of the net. The remainder of the second period passed without either team putting the puck over the goal line, but got physical with two separate fights breaking out and a total of 28 penalty minutes being handed out between the clubs.
Left wing Ned Lukacevic gave Las Vegas a 2-0 lead when his wrist shot from just above the left circle made it through traffic and past Reign goaltender Curtis Darling. Defenseman Craig Switzer recorded the assist on the power play goal at 3:34 in the third.
Reign center Jon Francisco's power play goal brought the Reign within one point of the Wranglers with just under 12 minutes left to play in the final period. Defensemen Andrew Martens and Mike Egener notched the assists on the play.
Forward Greg Hogeboom tied up the game when he scored the equalizer for the Reign with less than four minutes on the clock. Center Tim Kraus snapped a pass across the zone to Hogeboom, who fired off a slap shot that went straight into the back of the net. Hogeboom's goal forced a five-minute four-on-four overtime session, but neither club found the back of the net. The game went into a shootout, and after five rounds, both teams had two. It was Shawn Germain's goal in the sixth round of the shootout that ultimately claimed the win for Ontario with a final score of Reign 3, Wranglers 2 (SO).
