Ehgoetz Collects Three Points In Cyclones 5-4 Win

TRENTON, New Jersey - Cincinnati Cyclones captain Barret Ehgoetz picked up a goal and two assists in pacing the club to a 5-4 shootout win over the Trenton Devils. It was the first three point game of the season for the fifth year centerman from Kincardine, Ontario-his first since a three assist performance against Johnstown on April 3 of last season.

The Cyclones have now climbed to within three points of North Division leader Kalamazoo, one point behind second place Toledo and get five points ahead of fourth place Wheeling. Cincinnati has won seven of its last nine games and nine of the last twelve dating back to the night before Thanksgiving.

The Cyclones grabbed the first goal at 3:07 when Mike McLean notched his eighth goal of the season from Ryan Del Monte and Kevin Roeder. The power play marker was the 19th time in 27 games that Cincinnati lit the lamp first and the eighth time in the last nine contests that the Cyclones had the 1-0 lead. Trenton had opportunities in the first period to level the scores, outshooting Cincinnati, 16-8. The Devils also had four power play chances to two for Cincinnati. Trenton held a five-on-three advantage for the final 1:51 of the stanza. But rookie goaltender Jeremy Smith withstood the challenge in the first 20 minutes.

Cincinnati extended the lead to 2-0 at 3:56 of the second period when Barret Ehgoetz jammed home his tenth score of the season in a goalmouth scramble. Scott Reynolds had the assist. The Devils cut the deficit in half when Jeff Prough netted his seventh goal of the season nearly a minute and a half into a power play-at 7:54. Jeff Combs had the assist on the score. The Cyclones pushed the lead back to two at 3-1, when Reynolds slapped home his tenth goal of the campaign, taking a feed from behind the Trenton goal from Ehgoetz at 12:15. Hans Benson picked up the second assist on the score. Cincinnati then had an opportunity with a four minute power play, but could not convert. The Devils closed the gap to one at 3-2, when Trevor Kell collected his eighth goal at 19:54 with Chris Murray and Justin Coutu having the helpers. The shots favored Cincinnati, 18-10, in the second.

Entering the third period, Cincinnati was 11-1 when entering the frame with a lead and 75-6-3 in the past three seasons. Those numbers would improve by a victory each after this contest.

Cincinnati re-established a two goal edge at 4-2 with a five on three power play by Mark Van Guilder at 4:57 of the third period. Van Guilder's first score of the season came from Dustin Sproat and Ehgoetz and was netted on the power play. The second man-advantage tally marked the eighth time in 2009-10 that the club had multiple power play goals in a game and the first time since December 5 that this occurred. Trenton pulled goaltender Dave Caruso with three minutes remaining to get back in the game and roughly ten seconds after employing six attackers-it scored. Kell netted his second of the night and ninth of the year from Tony Zancanaro and Chris Poli at 17:21. With a Cyclones penalty with 8.8 seconds remaining, the Devils lifted Caruso for an extra attacker for the faceoff deep in Cincinnati territory. Trenton was rewarded when Prough scored his second of the night and eighth of the season with just three seconds remaining to knot the scores up at four apiece. The shots in the third favored the Devils, 17-8.

Following a scoreless overtime, the contest moved to the shootout for the second straight game between these teams. There were no official shots on goal in the extra frame and for the game, Trenton won the shots battle, 44-37. The Cyclones were two for eight on the power play, while Trenton was two for seven with the extra man. In the shootout, Dustin Sproat scored in the second round of the bonus frame and was the only shooter to score for either team. Jeremy Smith did not allow a goal in the five shots he faced.

Jeremy Smith picked up the win and improved to 8-5-1. Smith stopped a career-high 40 shots in collecting his fifth win in his last six starts. Dave Caruso drops to 4-8-2, turning away 32 shots.

Cincinnati is now 16-10-1, while Trenton is 9-13-6. The final contest of the three game set in Trenton takes place on Sunday at 4pm. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday, December 26 against Toledo at 7:30pm. Its is another ‘Kids Eat Free' promotion where patrons bringing a canned food item are given a voucher for a kids meal. Canned food items will be donated to the Freestore Foodbank.
