Jackals Drop Heartbreaker To Royals At Sold-Out First Arena
December 19, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals fell 2-1 to the Reading Royals on Saturday night at First Arena in Elmira, NY in front of 4,007 fans, another Jackals sellout. The Royals struck late in the third period on a deflection in front of Jackals goaltender Julien Ellis for the game-winning goal. Ellis made his Jackals debut on Saturday, stopping 16 of 18 pucks in the loss but playing well in defeat. The Jackals took a 1-0 lead when Jarrett Konkle, acquired by the Jackals in a trade with Johnstown on Thursday, one-timed a shot that was deflected by Chris Korchinski in front to give the Jackals the lead on the power play at 12:21 of the second period. Tyler Donati also received an assist on the goal.
Reading tied the game moments later, however. Ben Gordon took a long feed from Marc Cavosie and beat Ellis on a breakaway five-hole to give the Royals their first goal of the game at 14:53 of the second period, making the score 1-1.
The teams remained locked up late into the third period when Nick St. Pierre's blue line shot deflected off a Jackal and skipped into the net at 15:44 of the third period to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. The Jackals took a late penalty and were unable to get a puck past Royals goaltender Matt Dalton in the game's final moments, and the Royals notched a one-goal victory over the Jackals for the second straight game.
With the sellout, the Jackals upped their league-leading total to seven, two ahead of the Jackals ECHL-high of five sellouts in 2008-2009.
Ellis fell to 0-1-0-0 as a Jackal, while Dalton improved to 9-4-0-1 in 2009-2010.
The Jackals record slipped to 11-12-2-2 while the Royals record increased to 17-9-1-2.
Elmira hosts Johnstown on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at First Arena as the Jackals look to defeat the Chiefs for the fourth time in 2009-2010.
