Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Sean Venedam scored twice for the second consecutive games as the Condors smothered the Idaho Steelheads by a score of 5-1 in front of 3,460 fans at the Rabobank Arena.
The Condors began the game on the penalty kill following a Scott Borders tripping infraction. Idaho netminder Steve Silverthorn set the puck up behind his own net after the Condors cleared the zone. Andrew Ianiero stripped the puck from Silverthorn's feet and fed Sean Venedam in the slot. Venedam converted before Silverthorn could return to the crease to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead on the shorthanded goal.
Bakersfield doubled their lead at the halfway mark of the period when Venedam took a power play pass to Reagan Leslie at the blue line. Leslie fired a slapshot, which sailed past Silverthorn's right side to give the Condors a 2-0 lead with 10:05 left in the frame.
The lead would extend to three as Kevin St. Jacques stripped an Idaho defender of the puck behind the net. St. Jacques centered the puck past Eric Neilson, who drew attention away from Kevin Truelson at the top of the slot. Truelson let loose on a one-timer into the five-hole of Silverthorn as the puck trickled through the netminder's pads and across the goal line with 3:57 remaining in the period.
Leslie found a free puck on a delayed penalty and connected with Venedam once more. This time, it was Venedam who pounced on the open net to Silverthorn's right to make it 4-0 at 14:52 of the second. Andrew Ianiero made it 5-0 with 1:08 left in the period as he ringed a wrist shot inside the far post and across the goal line from the slot to give the Condors their largest lead of the season heading into the intermission.
The Steelheads would hit the scoreboard in the third period on a second effort by Kevin Gardner off of a rebound in the crease. The score read 5-1 Bakersfield, and would end up as the game's final score.
Ryan Munce earned the victory with 31 saves on Idaho's 32 shots. Steve Silverthorn was credited with the loss, stopping 18 of 23 shots faced. Idaho's Matthew Yeats stepped in between the pipes for forty-five seconds in the first period and stopped the only Condor shot he saw.
Other notes: Sean Venedam has scored four goals in his last two games. The Condors have won four of their last five games and improve to 9-2- 3 at Rabobank Arena.
The Condors will play back-to-back road games against Pacific Division opponents before hosting an American Conference power on Sunday. Bakersfield will visit the San Diego Gulls on January 13th, then travel north to Fresno to take on the Falcons on the 14th.
